The She-Demon’s Anatomy

May 15th, 2009 by admin (Who am I?)

Part one of a confrontation.

Detra nudged the broken door open with her foot and peered into the gloom, bow at the ready. She slunk inside slowly, checking every corner for movement.
“Jesse?”
“Yes?” Jesse followed Detra into the building and allowed her eyes to adjust to the little light filtering in through cracks in the roof.
“Do you cope when you see a dead body?”
“I don’t know, why?”
“You’re about to find out.” Jesse foolishly looked around and her eyes came to rest on a slumped body beside the doorway. It had been a guard, decked out in chainmail and a coloured vest with a crown on it.
“Here,” said Detra, wresting a spear from the dead man’s hands. The rigid fingers snapped at they released the weapon; he’d been dead for a while.
“I said I’d find you a weapon.” Jesse stared at the dead man’s face. The jaw had fallen open and an enterprising spider was weaving a web across his mouth. She had been expecting the dead eyes to stare into her soul, but instead they merely gazed at some mysterious point in the middle distance.
“How did he die?” Jesse wondered.
“I don’t know, there’s nothing I can see,” said Detra. “We’ll come back to it.”
“Him.”
“Sorry, we’ll come back to him.” Detra continued examining the room and Jesse regarded the spear. Of all the possible weapons she could have been given the spear was probably the one she was least likely to hurt herself with. That thought didn’t make her feel any better about the situation.
“I think it’s through here,” Detra said, resting her hand on the far door and listening intently.
“Should we get the others?”
“No.” Detra slowly grabbed the door with her left hand and eased it open.
“I’ll deal with this.” Suddenly a piercing, high-pitched wail erupted from the room beyond and the door flew open. The door hit Detra solidly on the head and flung her backwards towards the wall.
“Oh no…” Jesse stared in disbelief at the creature occupying the doorway. It had the face of a beautiful pale-skinned woman with dark hair that hung in wet waves, dripping onto the floor. Almost the entirety of the rest of her body was absent, however. The head was supported by a long, muscular oesophagus which dilated into a glistening, swollen stomach. A heart with torn blood vessels throbbed steadily in front of the stomach, which gave way to a tangle of intestines soiled on the floor. She screeched in the doorway, supporting herself like a grotesque serpent and twisted to face Jesse.
